FG will take urgent action on erosion – President Jonathan Jul 13, 2010, 19:11
| | President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has assured that the Federal Government will take urgent action to address the serious threat posed by soil erosion to many communities in Nigeria.
Speaking at a meeting with a delegation from Edo State led by Governor Adams Oshiomhole, on Tuesday July 13, President Jonathan said that it had become apparent that government could not rely on the ecological fund alone to tackle the serious challenge posed by gully erosion, river bank erosion and other forms of erosion to the lives and properties of many inhabitants of Edo and other states.
“We must address the problem. The threat to lives and property is very obvious and worrisome,” President Jonathan said while responding to an appeal from Governor Oshiomhole for assistance from the Federal Government in containing the threat of erosion in parts of Edo State.
The President also promised that the Federal Government will act immediately to restore the federal road link between Etsako-West and Akoko-Edo which has been severed by recent heavy rains that washed away a connecting bridge.
He thanked the delegation which included politicians from the major parties in the state, traditional rulers, elder statesmen, leading businessmen and women, clerics and administrators for the visit, saying that he was greatly encouraged by their pledge of continued support and prayers for the success of his Administration.
Governor Oshiomhole told the President that the people of Edo State were greatly impressed by his actions since he assumed office.
He said that they welcomed his commitment to reforming the electoral system, improving power supply and revitalizing the national economy.
The delegation included the three serving senators from Edo State, its members of the House of Representatives, former governors Lucky Igbinedion and John Oyegun, the Otaru of Auchi, the Iyase of Benin Kingdom, the Chief Judge of Edo State, Chief Tom Ikimi, Chief Raymond Dokpesi and Mr. Amodu Shuaibu, among others.
