FG approves fresh bids for Abuja Airport’s second runway Jul 15, 2010, 10:29
| | Sequel to the termination of the award of the N64 billion contract for the second runway at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) has given approval to the process for the re-award of the project’s contracts.
Aviation Minister, Mrs Fidelia Njeze, who made the disclosure while briefing the media on the outcome of the week’s FEC meeting at the State House, Abuja on Wednesday July 14, stated that fresh bids for the runway are to be advertised next week.
She stated that FEC also granted approval for the modification of scope of work for the resurfacing of runway at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, which she said has became necessary in order to accommodate the resurfacing of the second central parallel taxiway and associated links, which have failed at several portions and and which she said was very vital to the entire project.
She noted that with the modification, the contract sum was reviewed downward from the initial N3.56b to N3.32b, with government gaining a saving of N249.37m.
The Minister explained that those aspects were inadvertently omitted in the initial scope of works and that the project which has a six months period for execution, is catered for under the Federal Government Special Intervention Fund.
She assured that the process would meet global best practices for a job of that magnitude.
Council also approved contract for the execution of Zobe Water Supply Project Phase II Katsina State in the sum of N9.96b, with a completion period of 18months as well as the contract for Consultancy Services for the Zobe project in the sum of N253.26million, which also covers 18 months.
Council also noted that government considered the positive impacts the projects would have on the lives of the people around the area where the projects were located before approving the contracts.
Council ratified the Tourism Charter, which is to be launched during a Conference of Ministers of Culture, holding in Abuja, on October 2010.
FEC commended a Nigerian, Alache Ode, who was awarded an Order of the British Empire (OBE) by the Queen of England, for her humanitarian endeavors in Africa and Asia.
