Education Trust Fund to support NIPPS on the provision of ICT – VP Sambo Jul 22, 2010, 11:52
| | The Education Trust Fund (ETF) is to support the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPPS), Kuru, Jos, by providing the needed funds to enable it become Information Communication Technology (ICT) Compliant.
This indication was given by the Vice President, Arc. Mohammed Namadi Sambo, when the Management of the Institute was invited for a briefing session at the State House, Abuja, on Wednesday July 20.
Arc. Sambo noted the compelling need for information and communication technology in these modern times, especially in an institute that prides itself as the masterminds of the policy guide of the nation. According to the Vice President, “ICT is an indispensible panacea to attaining our developmental objective by fast-tracking our actions in addressing current and emergent problems in the country.”
He promised to ensure that the problems of inadequate budgetary provision for the Institute will be looked into in order to allow it operate properly, disclosing that a circular has already been sent to all ministries to settle their outstanding arrears. He advised that a policy framework that should serve as a guide for gaining admission into the Institute must be developed to ensure quality graduates from the Institute.
Earlier, the Acting Director General of NIPSS, Prof. Tijjany Bande, in his briefing stated that the Institution has been underfunded and emphasised the need for the provision of more funds which he said would assist in the upgrading of facilities in the institute.
He also asked Federal Government for an enhancement of salaries in order to attract quality staff to the Institute and bring them at par with their counterparts in the university system.
Prof Bande said “more fund is also required to help participants undertake a tour of African States as is expected of them before graduation and to carry out research to guide policy”. He lamented the lack of push to utilize the products of importance research carried out in the Institute.
In a related development, the Vice President has thrown a huge challenge to AANI to find lasting solution to the menace of corruption. He was speaking when the Board of the Association paid him a courtesy visit at the State House. The Vice President appreciated the visit and assured them of the support of the Federal Government in their determination to develop strategic partnership with government in addressing national issues such as kidnapping, power supply, electoral reform, ethno-religious crisis, foreign policy initiatives and the evaluation of institutions managing corruption.
Responding, the National President of the Association, Engr. Jani Ibrahim, thanked the Vice President for the honour and stated that their mission was necessitated by patriotism and the need to forge a strategic partnership that will form the thrust of a sustainable relationship which shall lead to the resolution of Nigeria’s myriad of problems. He noted that the Association had contributed in the formation of NDLEA, OMPADEC, FRSC, DFFRI, Federal Environmental Protection Agency and making the Culture Department to be a cabinet Ministry, amongst other.
