FEC approves N250 million contract for production of ‘Nigeria at 50’compendium

In the bid to properly document the historical evolutionary processes, achievements and human and material potentials of the nation, the Federal Government has approved the contract worth N250million for the production of a compendium on ‘Nigeria at 50’ to commemorate the nation’s Golden Jubilee anniversary celebration.
Minister of Information and Communications, Prof. Dora Akunyili, announced this at a media briefing on the week’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting chaired by President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday, 4th August, 2010 at the State House, Abuja.
The minister who stated that the approval was sequel to a memo presented to the Council by the president noted that the compendium will consist of 20,000 copies of 800-page (and 5,000 CD ROMs).
According to her the compendium will feature photographs on achievements in various sectors of the economy, tourist attractions, historical monuments, arts and culture including those of Nigerians in Diaspora.
She said that the steering committee on “Nigeria at 50” brought a proposal to produce a compendium, which is intended to highlight the nation’s journey so far; its history, achievements and challenges since independence and the aspiration of the people.
Prof. Akunyili explained that the steering committee was constituted to arrange, coordinate and execute the required programmes for a befitting celebration of the nation’s independence anniversary billed for October 1.
She disclosed that the contract for the production of the compendium was awarded to Messrs 1st October Publications Limited.
