President Jonathan unveils 50th anniversary countdown clock

President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has unveiled the countdown clock as part of activities towards Ist October 2010, the 50th Independence Anniversary of the nation.

Speaking at a brief ceremony in the State House, Abuja, on Wednesday August 11, President Jonathan said the event was symbolic as it commences a 50-day national countdown to the golden jubilee celebration.

The President noted that today's event was the beginning of activities that will culminate to what happened on the Ist October 1960 when the Union Jack was lowered and the green-white-green flags adorned the streets of Nigeria to mark Nigeria's Independence. ''In exactly 50 days from today, we will re-enact that similar event across the length and breath of our nation''. Jonathan stated.

President Jonathan observed that despite the current challenges facing the nation, Nigeria has a glorious past worthy of celebration.

''Our golden jubilee should arouse in us all renewed hope and enduring faith in Nigeria, we must rededicate ourselves to those patriotic ideals that bring out the creative and productive potentials in us all'', he remarked.

President Jonathan directed that the countdown clock be placed at strategic places across the country as constant reminders to the imminence of the golden jubilee Independence anniversary.

The occasion was attended by the Vice-President, Arc. Mohammed Namadi Sambo, Secretary of the Government of the Federation, Alhaji Ahmed Yayale, Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Steve Oronsaye, Ministers, Director-General of Nigeria at 50 celebration, Dr. Babakura Kaigama and a host of top government officials.
