Vice President Sambo felicitates with Congo Brazzaville on 50th Independence Anniversary Aug 16, 2010, 11:17
| | In typical African brotherliness, Vice President Mohammed Namadi Sambo on Sunday August 15, arrived the Republic of Congo, referred to as Congo Brazzaville, as Head of a high powered Nigerian delegation, to celebrate with President Denis Sassau Nguesso, the ‘special Cinquantenaire de l’independence Anniversaire’ (50th Independence Anniversary), of the country.
Vice President Sambo, representing President Goodluck Jonathan, is one amongst seventeen world leaders across the globe, invited to grace this historic occasion. He arrived the Maya Maya International airport to a warm welcome from the Brazzaville government and a rousing reception by the Nigerian Embassy Officials and the Nigerian community resident in Congo Brazzaville.
Congo Brazzaville, located in the Central African sub region is a land mass endowed with an expanse of tropical forest, ideal for agriculture. It is also rich in solid mineral reserve such as gold, as well as abundant natural attractions for future tourism industry development. With an estimated population of about 3.7 million people, it is acclaimed the fourth largest producer of oil in Africa; thus, the oil industry is the main driver of its economic growth.
The 50th anniversary celebrations commenced with the lighting of the anniversary torch which was handed down to the ‘2010’ generation. This act is symbolic of their appreciation of independence from colonial rule and a desire to perpetuate the peace and progress that has come with it. Also featured was the recognition and ‘decoration’ of outstanding Congolese nationals of the last half century of the nation’s history.
The ceremonies culminated in a grand parade of military troupes drawn from Congo , Togo , Cameroun , Angola , France (the French Legionaries), as well as air (paratroop) displays.
Both Nigeria and Congo Brazzaville have in the past participated actively under the auspices of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in the liberation struggles of fellow countries of the African continent, especially South Africa. Bilateral relations between Nigeria and Brazzaville are very cordial.
It is pertinent to note that Congo Brazzaville is one of seventeen countries of the African continent, including Nigeria, marking their 50th independence anniversary this year.
