FEC approves contracts for procurement of UBEC textbooks

The Federal Executive Council, (FEC) has granted approval for the procurement of textbooks for the Universal Basic Education, construction of headquarters building for the Code of Conduct Bureau and maintenance of Wupa Basic Sewage Treatment Plant all in Abuja.

Minister of Information and Communications Professor Dora Akunyili who stated this while briefing the media on the outcome of the week’s FEC meeting on Wednesday, September 1 disclosed that Council approved contracts in the sum of N1.71 billion for the purchase and supply of Primary 6 English Language, Mathematics and Science based activity textbooks for public schools nationwide, as a follow up to similar gestures to Primaries 4 and 5.

According to her the contract would be funded by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) for which N438.6 million has been earmarked in its 2010 Supplementary Budget as part of efforts to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) textbooks initiative of UBEC.
She stated that in efforts to consolidate on the achievements made in the provision of textbooks to public primary schools, the sum of N4billion was appropriated by the federal government under the MDGs Textbooks Initiative for the procurement of textbooks for pupils in public schools in Nigeria.

The minister stated further that the textbooks will be customised with the inscription: “MDGs-UBEC Textbook Initiative 2010 - Not for Sale”.
The Council meeting chaired by President Goodluck Jonathan also approved the construction of a modern nine-storey headquarters building for the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) in Abuja.

Akunyili noted that the building expected to be completed in 26 months will cost N3.59 billion although N594 million has been set aside for it in the 2010 Budget and that the balance will be appropriated for as an on-going project over the next two years at N1.5 billion for 2011 and 2012.

The building is expected to decongest the office which is currently overcrowded and also bring together members of staff who are currently separated at the annex complex.
The Information minister also announced council’s ratification of the extension of contract for operation, maintenance and staff training for the Wupa Basic Sewage Treatment Plant in Abuja.
The Plant was commissioned in May 2007.
