I may draw on your promised support, President Jonathan tells Coalition of 46 Parties
Sep 3, 2010, 12:30

President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has said that he will draw on the pledge of unconditional support given to him by a coalition of registered political parties if he decides to contest the 2011 presidential elections.

Speaking late Thursday, September 2 in the Presidential Villa, Abuja, after the presentation to him of a declaration of support signed by the National Chairmen and National Secretaries of 33 out of the 46 parties who said that they were ready to subsume all the structures of their parties into a national campaign organisation to ensure his victory at next year’s polls, President Jonathan thanked the delegation for their approval of his efforts to provide effective leadership for the country.

The President told the group which came under the auspices of the newly-formed Grand Coalition of Political Parties (GCPP) that he was humbled by their declaration of support and their appreciation of his achievements in office.

“I thank you for your kind words and appreciation of our achievements. With your support, we will work even harder to move Nigeria forward. We must build a country that our children will be proud of and we will contribute our best effort to this project,” he told leaders of the coalition.

The President also assured them that if he decides to seek re-election, they and their parties will be invited to play an important role in his national campaign. He urged them to convey his appreciation of their solidarity to all members of the coalition.

The declaration of support by the coalition for President Jonathan was presented to him by Alhaji Danjuma Mohammed, the National Chairman of the Movement for the Restoration and Defence of Democracy (MRDD) who said that 46 political parties had come together to support him in the overriding interest of the continued well-being and progress of the nation. Of the 46, he said, 33 have signed the declaration of support presented to the President.

“We have chosen to support you because while all other candidates are only offering us proposals, you already have ongoing projects to improve the living conditions of Nigerians. “We will not only work for you, we will go out and campaign actively for your victory,” Alhaji Mohammed told the President.

Others who spoke in the same vein at the occasion included Chief Udemba Chukwudolue, the National Chairman of the National Solidarity Democratic Party (NSDP) and Chief Emmanuel Osita Okereke, National Chairman of the African Liberation Party (ALP).
