Oct 8, 2010, 17:14

President Goodluck Jonathan has commended the uncommon zeal and patriotism exhibited by the incumbent Minister of Information and Communications, Professor Dora Akunyili, in the prosecution of the War against Counterfeit Medicine during her stint as the Director-General of the National Agency for Food, Drug, Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

The President who made the commendation at the presentation of two books written by professor Akunyili: The War against Counterfeit Medicine: My Story and Selected Speeches in Abuja on Thursday, October 7 noted that Prof. Akunyili was being celebrated nationally and internationally due to her unassuming stance while tackling the menace of drug counterfeiting in the country.
Commenting on Prof. Akunyili’s apology to all those who suffered economic losses in the prosecution of the war against counterfeit medicine, the President noted that she owe nobody any apology as she was rightfully on the path of national duty.

Earlier, the President had paid glowing tributes to the husband of Professor Akunyili for the support, encouragement and trust he afforded his wife and also the sacrifice the family had to make in the course of her duty as DG of NAFDAC.

Responding to the call by the presenter of the book, Nobel laureate Professor Wole Soyinka, for an examination of the quality of the “tear gas” currently in use by the Nigerian Police which he observed to be seriously compromised in standard and safety compared to the ones used in the days of the old, the President promised to cause an assessment of all equipments in the armoury of the armed forces with a view to ensuring that they conform to standards.
