The 2003 General Elections, which kicked off on 12 April, will cost the nation N45billion.

N36billion has so far been disbursed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for payment of its staff. Each worker will receive N1,000 daily for ten days.

INEC is working towards making elections less expensive in the future. For instance, the current voters register, which cost N12billion to compile, is a permanent one that will be updated and reused in the future.
