Opposition Parties reject election results
Apr 28, 2003, 20:41

Major-General Muhammad Buhari, the presidential candidate of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), rejected the results of the presidential elections held 19 April 2003, and called for non-recognition of any government formed by President Olusegun Obasanjo after 29 May.

A day after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared President Obasanjo winner of the elections, the ANPP presidential candidate spoke at a press conference on behalf of his Party and other opposition Parties. At the conference, he alleged that the presidential elections were characterised by irregularities in the South-East and South-South political zones, as well as in the Northern states of Bauchi, Katsina, Benue and Nassarawa.

General Buhari initially ruled out the option of appealing the results at the Election Tribunals, stating that he did not have confidence in them. Instead he indicated that civil disobedience would be used to challenge the election results.

However, the ANPP yesterday, Monday 28 April, issued a statement promising to go to the Tribunals to challenge the election results in various parts of the country.
