Electoral Irregularities?

Imo drop case against Wabara
Jun 17, 2003, 14:12

The All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) candidate for Abia South Senatorial District, Mr Dan Imo, on Saturday 14 June conceded victory to Senator Adolphous Wabara of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Abia State leaders prevailed on Mr Imo to drop his legal challenge against Senator Wabara who was elected and subsequently sworn in as Senate President on 4 June. Mr Imo has confirmed this fact, stating that he withdrew legal action after consulting with various stakeholders and considering the wider interest of his political constituency.

Imo’s concession settled the confusion created by two different sets of results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that awarded victory to each of the two candidates.

Up until 14 June when Imo withdrew his suit, the INEC website had continued to identify him as the Senator-elect for Abia South. This is in spite of the fact that an Abuja High Court on 2 June ordered the INEC to declare Wabara winner of the election and hand him a certificate of return.

Imo has congratulated Wabara on his election as Senate President, and has thanked the Abia State Traditional Council of Chiefs and other leaders who intervened to end the dispute.
