President Yar’adua orders a review of PTDF law

President Umaru Musa Yar’adua on June 26 in Abuja directed that the law governing the operations of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) be reviewed to meet current circumstances and stand the test of time.

The President who gave the directive after the Executive Secretary of the Fund, Alhaji Kabir Abdulfatah Mohammed, briefed him on the activities of the organization noted
“You need to have the right legislation to take care of all situations under which you operate”.

He said the law must address the original concept of the Fund or it will drift into so many areas that are not part of its mandate.

Earlier, the PTDF Executive Secretary told the President that the Fund had spent N9.39 billion to upgrade the Petroleum Training Institute,Warri, eight universities had been upgraded at a cost of N2.8b, while ICT centres have been established in 24 universities, 20 Federal Colleges of Education and 102-unity schools nation wide.

He said the Fund had also initiated the construction of a National Technical Institute for Gas and Petroleum Studies in Bonny Island and a Federal Polytechnic of Oil and Gas at, Ekowe, Rivers State.

Alhaji Mohammed told the President that 596 M. Sc. and 86 Ph. D. scholars had been trained by the Fund between 2002 and 2006, professorial chairs had been endowed in six universities in the country, while scholarships for training in local universities from the next academic session would be offered to qualified candidates.
