Address by
His Excellency, President Umaru Musa Yar‘Adua, GCFR
At the Opening Ceremony of the Annual Forum of the
Parliamentarians for Global Action
Abuja. 12th November 2007

PROTOCOL
On behalf of the people and government of Nigeria, I would like to express how delighted and honoured we feel at your choice of our Federal Capital, Abuja, as host of the 29th Annual Forum of Parliamentarians for Global Action.

Considering that the issues of poverty, unemployment and migration have recently engaged the serious attention of the international community, the theme of your Forum, Poverty and Unemployment: Eradicating the Root Causes of Migration, could not have been more timely and appropriate.

It is gratifying to see the world’s parliamentarians pro-actively deploying their legislative influence in engaging global socio-economic, development and political challenges, and driving the entrenchment of democratic good governance, justice, equity, and development across the world.

The government and people of Nigeria are determined to engage the international community in a pro-active synergy to collectively face up to the challenges of poverty, unemployment, disease, and migration which, if left unchecked, could threaten global peace, security and stability.

On the home-front, our Administration has demonstrated unwavering and unqualified commitment to entrenching an enduring culture of unqualified respect for the rule of law and constitutionality in the conduct of all government business. This derives from our fervent belief that persistent peace, stability and progress can only abide in a system that is rooted in equity, justice, the rule of law, and the fear of God.

It is my hope that your Forum will provide the needed impetus for the pursuit of genuine global partnership for the emergence of a global economic system predicated on fairness, justice and equity. That is the only way that we can meaningfully hope to build a world of shared prosperity, peace and security.

Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen, while wishing you very fruitful and fulfilling deliberations, I enjoin you to make out time to enjoy the beauty and unique ambience of Abuja.

It is now my honour and pleasure to declare the 29th Annual Forum of Parliamentarians for Global Action open.

Thank you.
