Mrs Turai charges African Female Ambassadors in UNESCO on peace

Towards the retention of peace in Africa, the wife of Nigerian President, Mrs Turai Umar Yar’Adua has called on African Female Ambassadors to UNESCO to use their good offices to ensure that peace reigns in Africa, so that peaceful co-existence, mutual understanding, respect, and harmonious living which are important tasks of development could be achieved. She made this call at the UNICEF Headquarters, Paris, on Thursday June 12 when she had an interactive discussion with them.

The First Lady in her present position of Chairperson of African First Ladies’ Peace Mission advised the delegation to rally round the First Ladies of their countries and give them all the co-operation, advice and support they need to achieve the objective of bringing peace to Africa and the world over.

Mrs. Yar’adua expressed appreciation for the efforts of the female Ambassadors in serving in an Organisation established primarily to construct peace in the minds of human beings through international co-operation in the key areas of education, the sciences, culture, communication and information.

Dr. Mary Mbiro Khimolu said they are ready to work in collaboration with the Nigerian First Lady’s project Women and Youth Empowerment Foundation WAYEF; the partnership will help to promote well being of women and youth.

Dr. Khimulu also expressed willingness to work with offices of the First Ladies in their countries.

In a similar occasion, Mrs Turai Umar Yar’Adua said her office in collaboration with Federal Ministry of Health is planning to send more girls to schools. She told Nigerian women in Paris of her plans for vocational classes for women which will equip them with skills. Mrs. Yar’Adua confirmed that with availability of abundant resources peace would be sustained not only at the State level but also in the home front. She made this known when she was hosted by the wife of Nigerian Ambassador to France, Mrs. Ijeoma Harry Gordon Bristol, in the Nigerian House, Paris.

Mrs Turai said the medical items by a humanitarian Organisation; Les Enfants De
Cana will certainly reach Nigerian grassroots. She said as National Goodwill Ambassador for Maternal and Infant Health; she will devise all necessary jurisdictions in her capacity to see the needy receive adequate care they deserve.

The Vice President of Les Enfants De Cana, Seraphine Ndginga Oba said the organisation has made modest contributions towards alleviating human suffering through giving aid to several francophone countries, but Nigeria is the first Anglophone country to receive this gesture. Mrs. Oba stated that the NGO would like to relate to Nigeria through the Office of the First Lady.

Les Enfants De Cana has donated 200 medical beds, 15 dialysis machines, 8 examination tables, stretchers, hospital clothing, consumable items and chairs to Nigerians through the First Lady.
