FEC approves Boulevard, more parks for Abuja

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday June 18 approved the construction of a Boulevard in the City of Abuja at the cost of N50billion.

N250million has already been provided as seed money in the 2008 Appropriation Bill for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for the commencement of the project.

The contingent area of the boulevard is 6.5 kilometres long and 0.7 kilometres wide, spanning the Eagle Square up to the two major entrances and exits into and from the city from the City Gate, by Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway and will cover 72 fully developed plots, 71 partially developed and 132 undeveloped plots the owners of who would be given the option to upgrade their buildings and facilities or have them pulled down and built in conformity with specifications on the boulevard.

FCT Minister, Dr Aliyu Modibbo said the scheme which would be executed under the public-private property arrangement while a plot of land will be 5,000 square metres instead of the FCT 1,000 to 1,500 metres. The plots in the area will cost between N50,000 and N75,000 per square metre instead of the current rate of N2,000 per square metre.
The development levy for each plot will be determined at a later time by the government.

The Minister explained that no force will be used in the implementation as due process will be followed up till the end.

Dr Modibbo said the boulevard, when completed is expected to attract and facilitate 24/7 commercial activities complemented by 24/7 vehicular and pedestrian movement.

FEC also approved the construction of six recreational parks and gardens in the FCT. The parks are to be constructed by some corporate organizations and service providers.
