The Council’s membership include President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, Vice-President Jonathan, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Population, the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice and the Head of Service.

The Vice President noted that implementation of the policy is the major task of the Council as the population policy is expected to provide a solution to the problems facing the people such as HIV/AIDS and reproductive rights, and also set out the roles of stakeholders like the civil society, the media and the private sector.

According to him, the national policy on population and sustainable development is a pragmatic approach to the multiple challenges of unplanned population growth in Nigeria adding that the policy sets out clear goals, objectives and targets to be met and also spells out the implementation of strategies for the effective management of our population.

He stated that the policy is an invaluable blueprint for improving the living conditions of Nigerians and reiterated government’s commitment to implementing it in line with the administration’s seven point agenda. He disclosed the Federal Government would inaugurate the Population Advisory Group and the Population Technical Working Group at a later date.

Vice President Jonathan urged states and local governments to implement the policy. He also called on Nigeria ’s development partners and corporate bodies to assist the Federal Government.
