President Yar'Adua condemns the coup in Mauritania

| | President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua has condemned the coup in Mauritania and asked the military to restore the deposed democratically elected government of President Sidi Mahamad Ould Cheik Abdallahi.
The President made the declaration at an audience he granted the Chiefs of Defence Staff of member countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) at the State House in Abuja on Wednesday August 6, saying that Nigeria would not recognise any change of government through unconstitutional means.
He noted that the action of the military junta could jeopardise the democratic gains that have been achieved in the West African sub-region so far. "We cannot afford turning back the hand of the clock anywhere in the sub-region," he said.
He warned that Nigeria and other African countries would not recognise the new Mauritanian military government and that they would not be accommodated in the comity of nations.
