Nigeria would facilitate urgent establishment of the West African Stand-by Force - President Yar’Adua
Aug 7, 2008, 10:59

President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua has observed that no nation in the West African sub-region could achieve meaningful socio-economic development without peace and political stability.

The President who made the observation when he received the Chiefs of Defence Staff of member-countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) who were on a courtesy call at the State House in Abuja on Wednesday August 6, said Nigeria would continue to lead the efforts to maintain peace and political stability in the sub-region in particular and the whole of Africa in general.

He disclosed that pursuant to this cause, Nigeria would facilitate urgent establishment of the West African Stand-by Force.

President Yar’Adua urged the military chiefs to name the specific assistance they would like Nigeria to render, pledging the preparedness of his administration to help.

The Chairman of the ECOWAS military chiefs, General Alli Traore of Burkina Faso, had earlier informed the President of a concrete agreement that had been reached by the body for the imminent take off of the stand-by force, which according to him, would comprise soldiers, police and gendarmes.

He noted with that the security situation in the sub-region has improved tremendously in spite the uneasy calm that still pervades some of the member countries.
