President Yar’Adua re-affirms commitment to a healthy society

President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua has reaffirmed the commitment of his administration to a healthy society as a prelude to development, stressing that before the economy of any nation can enjoy a major boost, the health of the citizenry must be ensured and enhanced.

The President who stated this in his speech at the 81st Annual National Conference of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) at the International Conference Center, Abuja on November 4, disclosed that the Federal Executive Council has approved the procurement of essential drugs worth N7 billion for the treatment of malaria and control of HIV/AIDS.

He noted that ''Vision 2020'' cannot be achieved without the active participation and cooperation of all stakeholders including the private sector of the nation’s economy to which majority of the members of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, which is reckoned to be a strong and dynamic association and a key player in the health care delivery system belongs.

Alluding to the saying 'Health is wealth' President Yar’Adua who disclosed that government had as a deliberate policy ensured that only local pharmaceutical manufacturers were awarded the contracts, noted that the knowledge and expertise of members on drug administration which is a critical component of health care delivery service comes handy in improving the health of patients adding that as controllers of the use of drugs, they should ensure that only essential medicines that are safe, potent and affordable are administered on patients.
