New salary regime approved for president, political office holders Feb 11, 2009, 13:37
| | In furtherance of efforts to come to terms with the realities of the ongoing global economic recession and ensure that national development is not too adversely affected by it, President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua has initiated action on a drastic downward review of his salaries and allowances, that of the Vice President and all political appointees and called on all public office holders serving in his administration to exhibit much greater honesty, dedication and commitments to selfless national service in the discharge of their official responsibilities.
The Special Adviser to the President (Media and Publicity) Mr. Olusegun Adeniyi, who made the disclosure at a press briefing on Tuesday, February 10 in Abuja stated that the President made the call for personal sacrifices for the greater good of the nation at a meeting with ministers, special advisers, senior special assistants and special assistants in his administration.
He said that the conviction of the President that the current remunerations were untenable and unjustifiable in the present circumstances necessitated his forwarding a letter to the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to consider taking necessary action on the matter.
According to Mr. Adeniyi, the President noted that despite the fresh challenges to national development which it had thrown up, the current global economic crisis would also provide fresh opportunities which insightful and perceptive leaders at all levels could utilise to ensure that Nigeria’s 20-20-20 vision is not derailed.
He added that the President has confidence in the capacity of Nigerians to seize the moment by using current challenges to reposition the country for peace and prosperity.
Other public office holders expected to be affected include governors, state and local government council political office holders.
