NIPP Steering Committee approves N117billion for completion of ongoing power projects Mar 20, 2009, 18:10
| | Presidential Steering Committee of the Nigerian Integrated Power Projects (NIPP) met on Thursday March 19 and approved a total of N117.30 billion for various power projects.
The approvals were aimed at ensuring that the Federal Government’s target of 6,000 megawatts by December 2009 is met.
The following companies are beneficiaries of the contracts. They include Egbin Electric Power Plc, Ughelli Electric Power Plc, Afam Electric Power Plc, Sapele Electric Power Plc, Kainji/Jebba/Jabba Hydro Plc, Shiroro Hydro Electric Plc, the Kaduna Electric Distribution Company, Kano Electric Distribution Company, Yola Electric Distribution Company, Ibadan Electric Distribution Company, Eko Electric Distribution Company, Jos Electric Distribution Company, Enugu Electric Distribution Company, Benin Electric Distribution Company, Port Harcourt Electric Distribution Company, Ikeja Electric Distribution Company, Abuja Electric Distribution Company, The Transmission Company of Nigeria, Geregu Power Plant and the Omotosho power plant.
The council, headed by Vice President Dr Googluck Jonathan also ratified the anticipatory approval of N2.1 billion in favour of the EPC contractor, Rockson Engineering, subject to the issuance of No Objection certificate by the Bureau of Public Procurement. The project is for the construction of a ramp and jetty for the crossing of the Imo River Crossing to enable the eventual delivery of heavy items to the Alaoji site where a power plant is being constructed in Abia State. It has a completion period of two months, that is, if the fund is released in the next two to three weeks.
The council also met with the relevant contractors handling various projects to convey the importance government is attaching to electricity and to impress upon them the need to accelerate the work programme and delivery time.
It also appraised the critical gas and transmissions projects thereby identifying possible bottlenecks that may impede the timely completion of the projects to ensure that government's targeting of 6000MW by December 2009 is on track.
Present at the meeting were the governor of Kaduna State, Namandi Sambo, Mohammed Goje of Gombe, Gabriel Suswam of Benue, Theodore Orji of Abia, Uduaghan of Delta and the acting governor of Ekiti, Tunji Odeyemi. Also present were the Minister of Power, Dr. Lanre Babalola, Minister of Finance, Dr. Mansur Muhktar and the Minister of State, Petroleum Resources, Mr. Odein Ajumogobia.
