Restore Plateau to its pristine status as a peace haven, President Yar’Adua charges Jos ruler
May 6, 2009, 14:26

President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua has urged the new Gbong Gwom Jos to use new office as the chairman of the Plateau State Council of Traditional Rulers to bring peace to the state.

President Yar’Adua made the call when a delegation comprising traditional rulers, commissioners and other prominent Plateau citizens led by the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Paulen Tallen paid him a courtesy visit on Tuesday May 5.
He paid glowing tribute to the Gbong Gwom, a former Comptroller-General, whom he said rose to the peak of his career in the Customs Service and also served Nigeria creditably and retired honourably, describing him as a great patriot.

He also said Jos must return to its former status as one of the most peaceful cities in Nigeria.

“Do your best to assist in bringing lasting peace in Plateau State and bring it back to its past position as a most peaceful state and tourist attraction in the country,” Yar’Adua said.

He commended Gyang for emerging as a traditional ruler after serving as a public servant, and expressed confidence in his ability to handle the new assignment.

“I believe in your abilities because for a few months I worked with you and I have known you as an honorable man”, the President said.

In his remark earlier, the new Gbong Gwom Jos, Jacob Buba-Gyang pledged to unite all residents in Plateau State and work for peace in a state that had been bedeviled by crisis in the last couple of months.

He expressed happiness that the meeting afforded him to meet the President in a different capacity from his former position as the Comptroller-General of the NCS.

He assured the President that, in line with his new assignment, he will ensure peace in the state.

“We will do all we can to restore peace and ensure that people in all parts of Plateau State live in peace”, he said.
