Niger Delta - details of Presidential amnesty to be released soon

Details of the amnesty offered by President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua to the militants in the Niger Delta who surrender their arms and embrace peace would be released on Thursday, June 25.

Special Adviser to the President (Media and Publicity) Mr. Olusegun Adeniyi, who made the disclosure while briefing the media on the outcome of the stake holders meeting held on June 18 at the State House in Abuja said that the President met with the stakeholders to discuss the issue of amnesty to the militants in the Niger Delta.

According to him the meeting of the stakeholders was enriching and that the president would announce to the nation what the package would be.

“After deliberations, it was decided that the president will hold meeting with the Council of State next week Thursday after which the proclamation of the amnesty will be announced the same day,” he said.

The meeting had in attendance the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Deputy Senate President, Governors of Ondo, Bayelsa , Delta, Rivers and Akwa Ibom, service chiefs, minister of defence and the minister of interior, who is the chairman of the amnesty committee.
