Jun 24, 2009, 16:37

Federal Government’s offer of amnesty to militant groups in the Niger Delta is yielding positive results as five more former fighters have declared their intention to accept the amnesty, embrace peace and abandon the path of destructive confrontation.

The militant groups and their leaders made their decision known in Port Harcourt on Wednesday June 23 after a meeting with the Minister of Interior, Major General Godwin Abbe and the Inspector General of Police, Mr Mike Okiro.

Those represented at the meeting which lasted for over four hours were “Ateke Tom”, “Fara Dagogo”, “Soboma George”, “Solo” and “BoyLove”.

Speaking on behalf of the group led by Ateke Tom, his counsel, Mr Ikenna Enekwezu stated the satisfaction of the militants to the efforts so far made by the Federal Government to stop militant activities in the area through dialogue.

“I can assure you that to a great extent we are taking a positive message back home to the people we represent”.

Interior Minister, General Abbe on his part reaffirmed that the amnesty was directed at all militants in the entire region who felt aggrieved and have participated in the militancy
One of the militants, called “Solo” announced that on Friday he will publicly hand over all arms and ammunitions at his disposal to the Federal Government.
