FG committed to speedy resolution of strike by university lecturers Jul 2, 2009, 15:44
| | The Federal Government is engaged in discussions with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) with a view to realizing a speedy resolution of the ongoing strike action by the Union.
Information and Communications minister, Professor Dora Akunyili who addressed the press after the Federal Executive Council Meeting at the State House in Abuja on July 2, expressed optimism that the crisis would soon be resolved.
According to her three key demands of the striking Union, including extending the retirement age university lecturers to 70-year retirement age, university autonomy and increased funding, have been granted by the Federal Government.
The minister who said that the issue of salary increment was still being discussed noted that government is currently studying the situation and will only agree to what it could pay so as to avoid a situation where government would agree and be unable live up to the terms.
She pointed out that the Education minister, Dr. Sam Egwu, was absent from the media briefing because he was briefing the President on the current state of the discussions.
Professor Akunyili also explained that the Federal government has not suspended the award of new contracts.
This she said is to correct the misunderstanding of the position of FEC as contained in some media and that the council only paused to take stock of what it had done so far, adding that it would be done every last Wednesday of every month.
