| | President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua has warned that Nigeria's socio- economic and political developmental strategies may not achieve the desired result unless greater attention is paid to the successful execution and implementation of the objectives of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD).
Speaking through his special adviser on NEPAD, Ambassador Tunji Olagunju, the President gave the caution while declaring open a two–day sensitisation workshop on NEPAD /APRM and the implementation of the National Programme of Action (NPoA) for state and local government officers organised by Delta state government on Monday, September 28 in Asaba, Delta state.
“The diligent implementation of NEPAD’s national programme of action is vital if Nigeria is to become one of 20 most developed global economies and a shining model of good governance by 2020.” He noted.
According to him, all tiers of government in the country are now faced with the challenges of the implementation of the national programme of action as endorsed and approved by the National Economic Council and the National Council of State, which was expected to have commenced in the 2009 fiscal year.
He disclosed that the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) is the flagship programme of the NEPAD which is designed to foster good governance, adding that Nigeria acceded to the APRM in Abuja in March 2003 and since then; Nigeria has continued to be a leading exponent of the initiative.
