NEC commends success of amnesty, approves injection of funds into economy Oct 7, 2009, 20:45
| | The National Economic Council [NEC] met at the Presidential Villa Abuja on Tuesday October 5 and commended the Federal Government on the successful conclusion of the amnesty programme and assured that all militants who signed the amnesty papers would receive equal treatment during their rehabilitation.
The Council, presided over by Vice President Dr Goodluck Jonathan, also approved the injection of two billion naira from the excess crude finance into the economy to reduce the credit crunch being experienced in the banking industry.
Briefing state house correspondents at the end of the meeting, National Planning minister, Dr. Shamsudeen Usman said the decision was taken to save the economy from further contraction and that the final details will be worked out in the next meeting of the federation accounts committee.
Assessing the amnesty programme which ended on the 4th of October, the council said the next phase which is rehabilitation of the ex-militants will be handled without delay.
The National Economic Council observed that internal security was very important in Nigeria. That was why the Federal Government instituted the committee on police reform which recommended that the Nigeria police must be properly funded.
On the economy, the Federal Government has approved the sum of two billion from the excess crude oil account to prevent the economy from further contraction.
NEC says the final details will be worked out in the next federation accounts committee meeting.
