Plans underway for commencement of First Lady’s ICCA

The First Lady and wife of the Nigerian President, Hajia Turai Umaru Yar’Adua has disclosed that the N9.5billion pledges following the International Cancer Centre Abuja (ICCA) fund raiser on 18th of July 2009, only N2.7billion has been realized and called on all those that have pledged to endeavor to redeem their pledges.

While expressing fears of the effect of a shortfall in the expected revenue would have on the project considering the huge sum of money building a Cancer Centre requires, the First lady who briefed pressmen in her office stated that a consultancy agreement was signed between the ICCA and MD Anderson Cancer Centre worth USD450, 000 and that the report from MD Anderson which is expected before the end of November 2009, will enable mobilization to site for work to commence.

Hajia Turai Yar’Adua explained that along the sidelines of the 53rd Session of the International Atomic Energy in Vienna, Austria, a memorandum of Understanding between the ICCA and the Agency was signed, this agreement provides for technical assistance to the ICCA.

She said the centre is designed with less privileged people in mind that cannot access cancer treatment due to financial incapacity.
According to her, ICCA has also been approached by Roche Diagnostics and Pharmaceutical Company. The company is offering to provide: Capacity building for oncology nurses and doctors, Educational/Awareness programmes for breast cancer including the production of a documentary.

Hajia Turai Yar’Adua noted that though the Centre is not operational, treatment support has commenced for indigent patients, so far 6 women have benefited from the programme and that plans are underway to distribute chemotherapy drugs worth N10million, donated by Sanofi-Aventis to various hospitals within the country for the use of indigent women.
