FEC approves funds for MDGs projects Nov 19, 2009, 14:39
| | The Federal Executive Council (FEC) on November 18, 2009 approved a total of N21.6 billion as the Federal Government counterpart funding for 166 Millennium Development Goal (MDG) projects under the 2009 Conditional Grants Scheme.
The release of funds for MDG projects and programmes under the Conditional Grant Scheme (CGS) has been ongoing; and the present projects are to be executed in 31 of the 36 states.
These were disclosed to reporters at the end of the Council meeting by the Minister of Information and Communications, Prof. Dora Akunyili, in the company of Minister of Mines and Steel, Mrs. Deziani Allison-Madueke, Minister of State for Information and Communications, Alhaji Ikra Bilbis and Senior Special Assistant to the President on the MDGs, Hajia Amina Ibrahim-Zubaru
Prof. Akunyili added that another approval was given by the Council for the contract for the extension of services for the national management consultancy for the Quick Wins MDG projects.
Briefing on the plans of Government to regulate mining exploration in Nigeria, Mrs. Allison-Madueke said an average of N10 billion is lost yearly to illegal mining across the country.
She however stated that once the formalization of the mining sector is done through proper documentation, Government would be able to regulate the sector more closely and efficiently.
Allison-Maduekwe further disclosed that the government was in the process of revalidating all the exploration licenses, and noted that the more the sector is formalized, the more it will become difficult for illegal miners to infiltrate.
