VP inaugurates five post amnesty committees Dec 17, 2009, 05:53
| | The Vice President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, on Wednesday December 16 inaugurated five Presidential committees and sub-committees on the post-amnesty programme in the Niger Delta.
Performing the ceremony on behalf of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua in Abuja, the Vice President expressed Federal Government’s commitment to the development of the Niger Delta region and total transformation of the Nigerian economy.
The Vice President said that the action was to revive the amnesty programme of the Federal Government, and noted that President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua personally approved the appointments into the various committees based on the individuals' and institutional capacities.
Dr Jonathan congratulated Nigerians on the progress so far recorded in the restoration of peace in the Niger Delta, and extolled the new cooperation and sense of nationhood exhibited by the ex-militants.
The Vice President urged members of the committee to uphold the trust reposed on them and ensure the success of their assignments.
Responding on behalf of the committee members, the Minister of Defense, Major General Godwin Abbe, pledged to work toward the success of the post-amnesty programme.
The Presidential Committee on the Modalities for the Involvement of Host Communities in the Ownership of Petroleum Assets in Nigeria has one month to submit its report. Its membership includes the Minister of State for Petroleum (Chairman), Minister of State for Finance, Special Adviser to Mr. President on Petroleum Matters, Special Adviser to Mr. President on Communications, Representative of the SGF, Solicitor General of the Federation/Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Justice, Representative of NNPC, three representatives of the former militant leaders and two community leaders.
The Disarmament committee has the Minister of Defence as Chairman. Other members include the Minister of the Niger Delta Affairs, Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta, representative of the SGF, military coordinator of the Amnesty Programme, representative of the Niger Delta Governors Forum, representative of the Inspector General of Police, Senior Special Assistant to the President on MDGs, National Coordinator of NAPEP and the DG of SMEDEAN. Others are the Director General of NOA, director General of NDE, Executive Secretary PTDF, Managing Director NDDC, four representatives of the ex-militant groups, Dr. (Mrs.) Timiebi Koripamo-Agary and two prominent leaders of the local communities to be appointed by the President.
The Oil and Gas Asset Protection sub-committee is chaired by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and has 14 members.
The Infrastructural Development sub-committee is chaired by the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs and has 12 members.
The sub-committee on Environmental Clean-up is chaired by the Minister of Environment and has 14 members.
