VP highlights role of music in society Jan 19, 2010, 19:05
| | Vice President Goodluck Jonathan has described the music industry as a big employer of labour that recruits many youths who could have taken to untoward tendencies off the streets.
He stated this on Tuesday January 19 shortly after his investiture as the first National Patron of the PMAN-Nigeria Music Hall of Fame by executives of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria [PMAN], led by its President, “Admiral” Dele Abiodun, who paid him a courtesy visit in State House, Abuja .
Dr. Jonathan therefore enjoined government and corporate bodies to support and encourage the growth of the music industry as one way of productive engaging the youths in society.
He stressed the need for society to always reward excellence and immortalise those who made notable contributions, one way or the other, to its growth and development.
According to him, “Our God-given talents should be used to generate wealth not only for individuals but for the society. The Music Hall of Fame is necessary because we need to celebrate performing artistes who have contributed positively to society through music. Many years later, people should be able to recognize them and recall their valuable contribution.”
He thanked PMAN for considering him worthy as the first National Patron of its Music Hall of Fame and promised to champion the development of the industry in the country.
Earlier, Abiodun expressed optimism that the entire entertainment industry, music inclusive, holds great promise towards a buoyant and vibrant Nigerian economy. To this end, he sought the Federal Government’s backing for a bill already before the National Assembly which will empower PMAN to regulate the practice of the music profession in Nigeria , in accordance with international norms and conventions.
