VP assures on local content

| | The Vice President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, has said Government will do its best to help local firms thrive in the country through an effective follow up of its local content policies and initiatives.
He stated this on Friday, February 5, when he received in audience a delegation of executives from two indigenous firms, Japaul Oil and Maritime Plc and Theremos International Services Ltd, in State House on Friday.
Dr. Jonathan commended local firms that have upgraded their expertise in major sectors of the economy and assured that Government will encourage them through vibrant local content policies and programmes that will boost manpower development and youth employment, and also discourage capital flight.
He urged local firms not to relent in acquiring the necessary equipment and expertise that will grow their operations and give them comparative advantage in the Nigerian economy.
Earlier, leader of the delegation and MD of Theremos Ltd, Lott Basil, solicited the support of the Federal Government for local firms particularly those in oil and gas operations. He noted that a good number of them operate with international best practices and urged Government to recognize their operations in developing the nation’s oil and gas sector.
Also speaking, MD of Japaul Plc, Jegede Paul, thanked the Federal Government for the amnesty programme in the Niger Delta, as business operations by local and multinational firms have fully resumed in the area after a lull occasioned by militancy in the past.
“Early last year, some of our contemporaries closed down and there was no business activity at all because of the security situation. But now the case is different. We can safely go about our operations without fear of attack. Things are really looking up now because of the amnesty programme” he said.
