VP seeks effective disaster management system
Feb 8, 2010, 15:34

Vice President Goodluck Jonathan has said the Federal Government will support fresh legislations that will enhance the nation’s capability to manage disaster.

He gave this assurance on Monday, February 8, when he received members of the House of Representatives Committee on Interior led by its chairman, Hon. Jerry Manwe, on courtesy visit in State House, Abuja.

“We don’t pray for disasters to happen, but as a nation, we should be prepared to confront the challenges should any disaster occur,” the VP stated.

While thanking members of the Committee on Interior for raising awareness and collating views through the first National Fire Conference in November last year, Jonathan urged them to come up with new legislations on disaster management that will complement existing ones, assuring that “Government will be ready to support you on disaster management in any way.”

He tasked the Reps’ Committee to partner with NEMA and complement their activities on disaster management in the country.

Earlier, Manwe expressed the Committee’s appreciation to the Vice President for his attendance and contribution at the Fire Conference last year, noting “your presence was a motivation and an inspiration for such a challenging issue, and equally highlighted the good relationship between the legislature and the executive in our nascent democracy.”

He said last year’s conference which aggregated views towards an all encompassing National Fire Policy, also holds the key to a standard fire code in Nigeria.
Also speaking, Minister of Interior, Shettima Mustapha, extolled the harmonious working relationship between his Ministry and the House Committee.
