Nigeria, Australia to sustain ties Feb 19, 2010, 14:56
| | Acting President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has said Nigeria will sustain bilateral ties with Australia and also partner with it in developing Nigeria’s solid minerals.
He stated this on Friday February 19, when he received out-going Australian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Jeffrey Russell Hart, who paid him a valedictory visit in State House, Abuja.
Dr. Jonathan said both countries have always being supportive of each other, while expressing appreciation to Australia for supporting Nigeria’s successful bid into the United Nations Security Council. He said Australia can also count on Nigeria’s support.
He particularly thanked Ambassador Hart for his efforts in promoting relations between both countries during the three years he served in Nigeria, adding that both countries will work to sustain the legacies.
Ambassador Hart said Nigeria and Australia have shared interests in areas such as United Nations peacekeeping operations in Africa. He said his country is deeply interested in solid mineral development in Nigeria as some Australian firms are already active in Nigeria. He expressed hope that his successor will maintain Australia’s flourishing relationship with Nigeria, saying “we don’t want to lose the momentum”.
