The Acting President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has extolled relations between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, describing them as very cordial.

He stated on Saturday February 20 when he received in audience, former British Prime Minister, Mr. Tony Blair, in Aguda House, Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Dr. Jonathan used the occasion to appreciate the British Government for its solidarity and encouragement to Nigeria on the recent political development in the country, and expressed optimism that both countries will continue to strengthen ties between each other.

The Acting President said the Federal Government is committed to institutionalizing good governance and credible elections in the country.

On the international scene, Dr Jonathan said ECOWAS is on top of the situation in Niger Republic. He said he received a situation report earlier from the ECOWAS mediator, Gen. Abdusalami Abubakar, on the military takeover in that country. He reiterated the zero tolerance of ECOWAS to unconstitutional accession to power in the sub-region.

He specifically commended Blair for his commitment to African affairs in and out of office, and acknowledged his support towards developmental initiatives in the continent.

Blair congratulated the Acting President on his assumption of office, saying the UK was pleased with the resolution of the political situation in Nigeria. He urged Nigeria not to relent in her role as a big player in Africa and the globe. He also described UK ties with Nigeria as very warm, adding that the UK will continue to cooperate with Nigeria.
