FEC approves road contracts worth over N22bn Mar 4, 2010, 11:07
| | The Federal Executive Council has approved contracts worth over N22 billion for road construction and rehabilitation. Council also received the report of the six-member Federal Government delegation to Saudi Arabia.
Briefing the media on the outcome of the meeting of the Federal Executive Council presided over by Acting President Goodluck Jonathan at the State House, Abuja on Wednesday, March 3, Minister for Information Professor Dora Akunyili stated that Council approved the award of contract for the reconstruction of the 35-km Owerri-Elele road linking Imo and Rivers state at a cost of N21.48 billion with an additional consultancy services for the project valued at N469.73 million.
She explained that the project is part of the post-amnesty programme aimed at enhancing accessibility and creating employment opportunities.
She said Council also approved contract worth N1.45 billion for the rehabilitation of Dengi-Jarmai Road in Plateau State. According to her the project is to be financed by the Federal Emergency Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) and the Ecological Fund.
The sum of N238.8 million was also approved for consultancy services for the Obiakpo-Obeng gas pipeline, which involves project studies and technical surveys, among other elements.
The minister also disclosed that the six-member Federal Government delegation to Saudi Arabia to see President Umar Musa Yar’Adua and the Saudi monarch, King Abdullah Bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud submitted its report to the Council.
She stated that the delegation departed Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, in the early hours of Tuesday, 23rd February 2010, at about midnight. On their arrival in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, they were received by the Nigerian Ambassador, Alhaji Abdullahi Aminchi and the Royal Protocol Personnel and driven straight to the Conference Palace, where they were accommodated.
According to her the delegation delivered the letter from Acting President Goodluck Jonathan to the Royal Majesty, King Abdullah Bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia through the Saudi Foreign Affairs minister who received the delegation on behalf of the Saudi King. The letter conveyed the profound appreciation and deep gratitude of the government and the entire people of Nigeria to the king, for the kindness, hospitality, fraternal care and excellent facilities extended to President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
She explained that the delegation did not consider it necessary to proceed to Jeddah, where the President was hospitalized when the Nigerian Ambassador, Alhaji Abdullahi Aminchi informed them that he had received information that President Yar’Adua had been discharged and was on his way back to Abuja. Accordingly, the delegation departed Riyadh at about 5.30am on Wednesday 24th February 2010 and arrived Abuja at about 10.30 am.
The delegation led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation Alhaji Yayale Ahmed included Minister of Health Professor Babatunde Oshotimehin, Minister of Foreign Affairs Chief Ojo Maduekwe, Minister of Petroleum Alhaji Rilwan Lukman, Attorney General and Minister of Justice Adekotunbo Kayode (SAN) and Minister of Agriculture Dr. Abba Ruma.
