Acting President optimistic of peaceful electoral process in Nigeria
Mar 4, 2010, 20:00

The Acting President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, has said the Federal Government will do its best to institute a peaceful and violence-free electoral process in the country.

He stated this on Thursday March 4 when he received in audience members of the African Peace Foundation led by Lt Gen J. T. Useni in State House, Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Dr. Jonathan said no government can operate effectively without peace, noting that good governance can only thrive in a peaceful environment.

He pointed out that good leaders can only emerge through credible elections as leaders who get to power through violent means do not feel obligated to the people.

He thanked members of the African Peace Foundation for their concern and efforts towards non-violent elections in the continent and assured that the present administration will do its best to ensure that the next general elections are violence-free.

Earlier, Gen. Useni (rtd.), said the African Peace Foundation has been involved in mediation and conflict resolution efforts across the African continent and the Middle East.

He said the NGO is ready to collaborate with Government on curbing electoral violence in Nigeria as its own commitment towards national and global peace-building.
