I will not interfere with anti-corruption agencies – Dr Jonathan Apr 30, 2010, 15:54
| | Acting President Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has promised not to interfere with the activities of the Economic Financial and Crimes Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practice and Related Offences Commission(ICPC) and the Code of Conduct Bureau(CCB), saying this is in the interest of Nigeria.
He stated this at the inauguration of an 8-member Board of the Code of Conduct Bureau in the State House, Abuja on Friday April 30. Dr Jonathan said the Bureau has the mandate to establish and maintain high standards of morality in the conduct of government business by ensuring that the actions and behavior of public officers conform to the highest standards of public morality and accountability.
He charged the Board to take a cue from the administration’s determination to ensure a corrupt free public service. ‘You can do this by taking up the challenge to make the Assets declaration exercise more relevant in the anti- corruption drive by ensuring that Assets declared by Public officers at the beginning and end of tenure as well as prompt investigation of breaches of the code should be addressed with all seriousness’, Jonathan stated.
The Acting President assured the Board that the administration will support and empower it with relevant resources required for carrying out their assignment.
In his remarks, Chairman of the Board Mr. Sam Saba, promised to tackle the assignment with the seriousness it deserves and to deliver on the collective goal of a corrupt-free society.
He commended the Acting President for his determination to address the issues of corruption; electoral reform and power which he said were critical aspects of good governance.
Other members of the Board are Alhaji Ibrahim Manzo, Chief Stephen Bekefula, Amb. Habib Elabor and Dr Mrs. Christiana Okwori. Others are Alhaji Disina Mohammed, Prince Okechukwu Nwadinobi and Dr Ademola Adebo.
