Discharge cargo at designated terminals only President orders importers May 14, 2010, 22:01
| | President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has directed the Ministries of Transport, Commerce, Petroleum Resources and their parastatals to ensure that all goods imported into the country are discharged at designated terminals of the Nigerian Ports Authority, saying Government will no longer condone the flouting of this directive.
He stated this on Friday May 14 while commissioning the completed ports facilities at the Onne Ports, Onne, Rivers State. The President also performed the foundation-stone laying ceremony of the Phase 4 projects at the Onne Port Complex as part of his ongoing two-day visit to Rivers State.
Dr. Jonathan said, “Government will no longer condone security threats and huge loss of revenue through the practice of midstream discharge of import and export cargoes. Presidential directives banning midstream discharge and private jetties from receiving ocean going vessels directly at their jetties are still in force.”
According to President Jonathan, Government will continue to encourage genuine investors in the country in the drive towards repositioning the nation’s economy among the world’s leading economies.
He said Foreign Direct Investment remains one of the corner stones of the nation’s economic agenda towards placing the Nigerian economy in the league of leading economies of the world.
He congratulated the Federal Ministry of Transport, the Nigerian Ports Authority and Intels Nigeria Ltd for their partnership and resilience over the years to make the Onne Port projects a success story. He also commended the Government of Rivers State for providing the enabling environment for the completion of the projects.
The projects, five in number, include: Berths 4, 5 & 6 at the Federal Ocean Terminal (FOT); internal road network; comprehensive water network at the Federal Lighter Terminal (FLT); Federal Lighter Terminal (FLT) 4 Jetty; and the West African Container Terminal (WACT) Jetty.
Speaking earlier, chairman of the NPA board, Chief Anthony Anenih, said the projects are essential as a response to the upsurge in maritime operations at the Onne Port Complex and the increasing need to serve the oil and gas sector in the West and Central Africa sub-region.
President Jonathan had earlier commissioned and inspected a number of projects across Rivers State.
He laid the foundation stone of the new Chief Adokiye Amiesiemeka Stadium and the Games Village at the Greater Port-Harcourt City, as well as the Port-Harcourt Monorail project.
Other projects commissioned by Jonathan were the reconstructed and dualised Oginigba-Amadi-Eastern Bye-Pass, the Rumukwurusi Junction Interchange and the Trans Amadi 100 megawatts gas turbine projects.
The President inspected the Port-Harcourt-Owerri and Tam David West roads, the 1, 117-unit Rainbow Housing Estate, the Rumuokwuta – Rumuola Road, and the Rumuobiakani-Oginigba road.
Other projects also inspected by Jonathan were the Elekahia Primary Health Centre, the Model Secondary School at Ebubu, and the Ogoni-Andoni-Opobo-Nikoro Unity road.
He was accompanied by House of Reps Speaker, Dimeji Bankole, the Governors of Rivers, Bayelsa, Edo, Enugu, Imo, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River; the Ministers of Works, Petroleum Resources, Education, Information and Communications, Minister of State Works, Presidential aides and top officials of the Rivers Government.
The President will attend the 26th convocation Ceremony of the University of Port-Harcourt tomorrow.
