Council of State endorses Prof Attahiru Jega as INEC Chairman

The National Council of State has endorsed President Goodluck Jonathan’s nomination of University teacher and administrator, Professor Attahiru Jega, as new chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC and also the nomination of 10 national Commissioners and 19 resident electoral commissioners
Governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomole, who made the announcement on Tuesday June 8, after the Council’s meeting in the Presidential Villa in company of Governors Babangida Aliyu of Niger State, Sullivan Chime of Enugu State and Sule Lamido of Jigawa State, stated that Council considered the recommendation of Professor Attahiru Jega for appointment as chairman of INEC and approved it unanimously.
He disclosed that Council commended the president for the quality of the people nominated who were considered to be men and women of integrity and expressed confidence that the nominees would not have problems sailing through the Senate screening.
According to him, the council resolved that any of the existing electoral commissioners whose tenure has not expired but who might have been found wanting of any particular wrongdoing would be promptly removed and replaced.

Professor Jega, 53 currently the Vice Chancellor of Bayero University Kano and a former National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, replaces Professor Maurice Iwu.
