FG set to reposition education sector Jun 9, 2010, 12:18
| | The Federal Government has expressed her determination to reposition the education sector through increased funding from the annual appropriation, Universal Basic Education (UBE) Commission Intervention Funds and Education Trust Funds (ETF), so as to achieve the national objectives and meet the nation’s global commitments.
Representing President Goodluck Jonathan, Vice President Mohammed Namadi Sambo who stated this at the formal launching of the National Campaign on Access to Education at the Mahmud Ribadu Square, in Yola, Adamawa State, on Tuesday, June 8, noted that the event, which formally marked the implementation of the roadmap approved recently by the Federal Executive Council, is targeted to further improve access to education in Nigeria.
The Vice President stated that for the campaign to be effective, it has to be diversified and comprehensive, dealing with all factors impeding access to education such as religious, economic, cultural and through the involvement of all stakeholders, public and private adding that the Campaign will be the flagship amongst the various strategies aimed at raising the level of literacy and addressing the 2008 and 2009 Global Monitoring Reports on Education, which rated Nigeria very low.
According to him Yola was chosen as the venue for the launch following government’s recognition of the efforts that the current administration in the state is making, towards educational development adding that
Adamawa State emerged the overall best in the country, in the aspect of implementation of the UBE programme in the last national assessment of the UBE Commission. The state was also acclaimed the foremost in Nigeria as the land of great opportunities in basic advanced education.
Speaking at the occasion the Governor of Adamawa state, Admiral Murtala H. Nyako, who noted that the occasion is a unique and historic one, stated that the campaign is a national programme, owned by stakeholders with the objective of addressing the plight of about 10,000,000 Nigerian children who are out of school adding that through it, qualitative basic education will be made accessible to all children.
He stated that efforts made so far by Adamawa State towards attaining these objectives include the establishment of Vocational and Technical Training centers in each Senatorial zone in the state and the opening of a Specialized Works Training center amongst others.
The Minister of Education, Proffessor Mrs. Rukayyatu Rufa’i in her address disclosed that the present administration has placed a very high premium on education, as a key success factor in the drive to fast track the socio-economic development of the nation, towards the attainment of the 7-point Agenda, Education For All (EFA), Millennium Development Goals (MDG) and vision 20-20-20.
Professor Rufai added that the launch which is one of the initiatives identified is therefore a giant step towards the promotion of access to education, especially for the girl child, disadvantaged groups and children with debilitating physical and other challenges.
Dignitaries who present at the launch include representatives of executive governors, legislatures, Emirs and Chiefs amongst others.
