FG committed to the development of the Niger Delta – President Jonathan Jun 20, 2010, 17:30
| | President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has reaffirmed the commitment of the Federal Government to the development of the Niger Delta.
At a civic reception in his honour in Asaba, on Saturday June 19, during his one-day working visit to Delta State, the President declared his “irrevocable commitment to restore hope and confidence” in the Niger Delta region, while reassuring that the Masterplan of the region was on course.
President Jonathan, who commended Delta State for the prevailing peace since the amnesty, noted that it is the beginning of development.
“Peace is key to the development of the Niger Delta in particular and Nigeria in general,” he stressed.
The President said that his determination to ensure that “children in the Niger Delta will no longer need to carry weapons in order to earn a living,” informed his weekly meetings with governors of the region.
President Jonathan while referring to the Delta State University Teaching hospital and the Headquarters of the Nigerian Navy Logistics Command both situated in Oghara and built by the State, which he had earlier commissioned, stressed his Administration’s commitment to equipping and modernising the armed forces.
He decried the lack of a maintenance culture in Nigeria and called for the pool of well-trained professionals in the armed forces to be deployed to other civil duties as in other countries.
President Jonathan while also commending the modern facilities in the teaching hospital, said that it will stem the current capital flight as a result of prominent Nigerians seeking overseas medical treatment.
During a courtesy call on the Ovie of Oghara Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Oreki II, the President thanked the people of the Kingdom for the warm reception and the peace in the community.
In his welcome address at the civic reception, Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, who received presidential commendation for “his vision of a Delta without oil,” praised the leadership qualities of the President, while pledging the “wholehearted support and loyalty of the government and people of the State,” to the Federal government, and support for the amnesty programme.
The governors of Edo, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bayelsa and Rivers States were among prominent Nigerians who came to receive the President during the visit.
