Elections to hold on April 19

The 19 April date for the presidential and governorship will not be shifted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) due to infrastructure, security and logistic problems.

Sensitive balloting instruments, namely the balloting papers, the various results sheets and voters cards will require more than 350, 40-feet trailers to convey from Abuja to the states’ headquarters. From the states’ headquarters, the materials would be arranged before being moved to the different polling stations. Distribution and retrieval of materials after the conclusion of one election will take an average of four to five days and there is need for sufficient time between two elections for the distribution of the materials and deployment of men for the next election.

It was based on this consideration that the electoral commission staggered the elections on weekly basis starting with the National assembly elections on April 12 and the Presidential elections on 19th April with possible run-offs on the 26th and 29th of April.
