President Umaru Musa Yar’adua has called for the resuscitation of the Nigeria – Chad Joint Commission before the end of this year.
Mr. President made the call when he received the new ambassador of Chad to Nigeria, Mr. Mahamat Habib Doutoum, at the State House July 6.
In his welcome address, President Yar’adua said: “We need to take immediate measures to ensure that our joint commission meets in Abuja before the end of this year, to discuss issues that will deepen and widen the horizon of our relations”.
President Yar’adua summarised the issues of core importance to Nigeria and Chad as including restoring the Lake Chad, improvement of trans-border security, economic and cultural cooperation and the challenge of Darfur.
He reiterated Nigeria’s resolve to continue to maintain and strengthen the warm brotherly relations with Chad, and wished Mr. Doutoum a successful tenure in Nigeria.
President Yar’adua also requested Mr. Doutoum to extend his condolences to President Idris Deby and the people of Chad on the death of his son in France, last week.
In an earlier address, Mr. Mahamat Habib Doutoum had said Chad recognised the important role Nigeria was playing in the affairs of the sub-region and Africa, and added that “Nigeria remains strategic to Chad economically”.
He thanked President Yar’adua for the honour of being the first ambassador to present his credentials to the new government.
