In furtherance of her dogged determination to address the power situation in the country, the Federal Government has approved over N8bn for the expansion of power infrastructures.
The minister of information and communication, Mr. John Odey, who made the announcement after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on November 21 in Abuja said, council has approved the award of contract at the total cost of (N8, 739, 665,010.48) which also include the upgrade of facilities at PTI, Ikoro, selected Nigerian universities, the National Technical Institute (NTI), Bonni and the establishment of oil and gas polytechnic at Okunniwi under PTDF mandate, which is for senior and middle level manpower in the oil and gas industry.
According to him, council also approved the second phase of upgrade projects in eight additional universities plus training of more quality service and technology graduates under the facility, by the International Development Association (IDA).
On efforts at improving power supply,the Egbin zonal power station is to be rehabilitated and overhauled at N1.2 billion, added to progress on 19 transmission lines nationwide.
Adding,"Council is aware that there is the need to expand the transmission infrastructure to accommodate generating stations. Council therefore approved the award of contract for the construction of 19 various transmission line projects for the year 2007 to various contractors as details attached to the schedule forwarded to the ministry as well-with the total sum of N38, 412.77 only".
The council also approved the sum of N171.2 million for laboratory facilities at the National Veterinary Research Institute, for vaccine production while the $50 million grant from the international development association to support HIV coordination and response from 14-35 states was also ratified.
