President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua has observed that the Germany-based United States African Command (AFRICOM) can help not only in the establishment of the African Stand-by Force, but also in the proposed Gulf of Guinea Force where troops would be contributed by the countries within the region.

The President stated this during his meeting with the United States President, Mr. George W. Bush, on December 13, at the White House in Washington.

According to him, the partnership that would help Africa in the area of security is for Africom to assist in training, equipping and providing other logistical support for the African Stand-By force, in which countries within the continent would contribute troops.

Responding, President Bush who praised President Yar’Adua’s government for his adherence to the rule of law pledged the assistance of the US government to Nigeria in the area of electoral reforms, education, providing lasting solution to the Niger Delta problem and the fight against HIV Aids.
