President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua has said the challenges of infant and maternal mortality, nutrition, water and sanitation, malaria and tuberculosis could be overcome with development of an economy that provides jobs and income for people to meet the basic needs of life.

The President was speaking to the Director General of the World Health Organisation, Dr. Margaret Chan, at State House Abuja, on Friday February 22.

“These problems are all linked to the level of development, and so we are working hard to achieve double-digit growth over the next thirteen years, in order to transform our economy sufficiently for jobs to be available and families can earn incomes to meet their health, educational, nutritional, water and sanitation needs”, he stated.

President Yar’Adua told the WHO Director General that the challenges in the nation’s health sector were being addressed, and a holistic and permanent solution was being considered through the National Health Policy bill now being prepared.

The President thanked Dr. Chan for her visit and the useful observations she had made about the nation’s health sector.
