Past and serving NASS leaders visit President Yar’Adua

President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua has expressed appreciation to the leadership of the National Assembly for the “maximum cooperation” extended to the Executive arm of the Government.

President Yar’Adua was speaking at an audience he granted to current and former presiding officers of the National Assembly at State House, Friday June 20.

He said, “we have been able to mutually resolve any differences with the current National Assembly leadership, and we have no problems at all between us”, and requested the former presiding officers to “join the Vice President and myself to express our sincere appreciation for the cordial and warm relationship from them”.

The President welcomed the meeting, and said he would be glad to host a bi-annual meeting with all current and former presiding officers of the National Assembly, where issues of national relevance can be extensively discussed.

President Yar’Adua expressed concern at the absence of an enabling law providing for the entitlements of former presiding officers of the National Assembly, and requested that the relevant bill passed by the two Chambers be submitted for his assent.

He also directed that action be taken to accord due recognition to former presiding officers during national engagements.

Earlier, the Current and Former Presiding Officers, speaking through Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, had requested President Yar’Adua to sign into law, the bill providing for their entitlements, similar to the provisions for the Executive and Judiciary. He commended the President for “creating the atmosphere for the existing cordial relations between the Executive and the Judiciary, as well as the deepening of democratic practice in the country”.

Senate President, Senator David Mark led the delegation.
