Mrs Yar’Adua tasks women journalists

The Nigerian First Lady, Mrs Turai Umar Yar’adua has tasked members of the Nigerian Association of Women Journalist (NAWOJ) to be the voice of voiceless Nigerian women.

She also said women journalists should saddle themselves with the task of informing society on the roles of women in their homes and society in general.

The First Lady made these statements when she received members of NAWOJ in her office on Friday June 20.

Mrs Turai expressed dissatisfaction with how women and girls suffer from different gender based violence ranging from rape to widowhood, still the society is indifferent to redress the harmful incidences, and she said as women journalists it’s their top most priority to unveil the agony of women to the wider world.

The First Lady said the girl-child deserves freedom of choice when it comes to career or spouse selection. She promised to donate a bus to association in response to the plea earlier put forward by NAWOJ.

The National President of NAWOJ, Mrs. Fatimah Abdulkareem, expressed determination to speak out on issues bordering on the Nigerian girl-child education and to give total media support to it. She said ‘as women journalists our survival and future membership is guaranteed by this well-intentioned and well thought out Girl-Child Education Project’.
